HYAKKI YAGYŌ
Plum • Rain-Soaked Earth • Smoky Hinoki

Rain drips from the crimson torii gate as you pass beneath it. Your feet press into the soft earth, stirring the scent of wet soil and fallen leaves. The forest is still, but farther up the path, paper lanterns sway between the trees.

You follow their light past an old plum orchard. Fruit hangs heavy on the branches, its deep sweetness lingering in the cool night air. Beyond the orchard, smoke curls from a shrine’s dying fire. The scent of smoldering hinoki settles into your clothes as you stop beneath the eaves.

Through the haze, the lanterns draw closer.

A procession moves slowly past the gate. You catch glimpses of pale faces and embroidered silk, then lose them behind the smoke. No one looks toward the shrine. You stand still and let them pass, breathing in ripe plum, damp earth, and the warm wood smoke sheltered from the rain.

Long after the last lantern disappears, their scent remains.
